These are the various animation projects I’ve done over the years in reverse chronological order. I have attached concept art and project work for many of these animations as well. Please open the images in a new tab if you would to view them more clearly!

SECOND YEAR GROUP PROJECT - ‘LUMEN’

‘Lumen’  was a group project with the theme ‘Frankenstein Lives’ and focused on hybridisation of characters, character acting and their relationships with one another.  We decided on having a robot-plant hybrid to subvert the common robot-human hybrid character type, and referencing the project theme, the common thread between the characters of ‘Roboplant’ and ‘Raycat’ is that they are both man-made. It was a really thought provoking project in terms of how the relationship between Raycat and Roboplant can develop alongside the movement of the story. There was a minute limit for the animation so I paid careful attention to their performance and expressions as a way of communication. I also put a lot of thought into the background and sound design to fit the story and create a fully immersive experience.

FIRST YEAR  LIP SYNC PROJECT - ‘BIG BEN’

This was a lip sync project in which interview answers about London that we personally recorded were subverted and turned into the audio for the animation. The time limit for this project was around 15 seconds so I wanted to lean into a more comedic interaction. A part of this was the idea to ask people who lived outside of London or in a different country about their knowledge/opinion of the city. This resulted in a lot of unique audios, and I went with a discussion between two guys discussing Big Ben. Since it sounded like slightly childish bickering, I thought drawing them as toddlers arguing about a toy would be a perfect way to complete this lip sync exercise whilst also including a complete comedic interaction.

FIRST YEAR PERSONAL PROJECT - ‘INKLING’

This short project was related to the ‘Introduction to Animation’ lecture series about the history of animation.  It is inspired by the early character animation created by Windsor McCay, as well as early pixilation examples, such as the ones in the 1908 short film ‘The Electric Hotel’. I wanted to experiment with pixilation, (despite not having a proper camera set-up) and have an interaction with a 2D character in a 3D ‘live action’ space. This cartoon and real person interaction is an homage to McCay’s 1914 film ‘Gertie The Dinosaur’ where the both cartoon and real aspects of the animation affect each other. I wanted to have a similar type of interaction in ‘Inkling’  and created this artist and creation interaction.

FIRST YEAR GROUP PROJECT ‘CREATURE FEATURE’

‘Creature Feature’ was my first university group project animation.  The artistic range of ideas formed from working in a team really shine through in the uniqueness of the characters. The challenge with this animation was getting a coherent story across within the 30 second time limit. However I learnt a lot from this experience and it really strengthened my visual storytelling skills as well as creative problem solving. I also exercised my skills in immersive background making to make the mushroom swamp backgrounds fopr the animation. It was a really fun experience working with mixed media for the project and having a real-life boat created and incorporated into the background environment.

FIRST YEAR EXPERIMENTAL PROJECT - ‘SPACED OUT’

This was an experimental animation project created entirely in monochrome and avoiding digital software as much as possible. All of the animation was done using Dragonframe and utilising a rostrum camera. I created the soundtrack by experimenting with analogue electronic music for the first time and is mostly a combination of two Korgs and a Kalimba. The music inspired the animation to have a more robotic/industrial theme to it. I made everything out of card and used fineliner to add detail. The robotic arms were created out of many small pieces to maximise mobility and discreetly stuck together with blu-tack to facilitate the stop motion process and ensure the pieces didnt get lost.

DUO ANIMATION PROJECT - ‘END OF THE WORLD HOTEL’

A one week duo university project with the theme ‘Last Day On Earth’ made using mixed stop motion animation styles. This included paper cutout animation, pixilation and animating using sand. I made the outlined backgrounds using ink and watercolour paint, and finished with a fineliner to add details. We used dragonframe for the stop motion capture and it was very interesting experimenting with a destructive animation style when using sand.

PRE-UNIVERSITY WORK - ‘CYCLE/WASHING MACHINE WATCHING’

This short animation was inspired by numerous trips to the laundrette. The background is made from 3 vertical videos of the same washing machine with the number 8 on it, which symbolises infinity and repetition. I wanted to test out making a mixed media animation and capture the feeling of a seemingly endless wait.
